Common Website Design Mistakes And How to Avoid Them
Here are five of the more frequent website design mistakes we’ve encountered at our website design agency, Operation Technology, while working with web design clients, along with a tip or two about avoiding them:
Lack of Website Content Organization: The way your site is structured plays a key role in attracting and retaining visitors. Your pages must be constructed in a way that encourages readers to stick around long enough to get the message you’re trying to convey. Beginners often make the mistake of blasting away with page after page of copy, hoping that something will resonate with their visitors. Avoid falling into that trap by breaking up written content logically, condensing information, using bullet points, paragraph headings, charts and photos.
Lack of Readability: Even if your site’s design takes good organization into account, you can still miss the boat by making written content unreadable. This happens in two ways; first, if the copy is poorly written from a grammatical standpoint, visitors will see your company as less than credible. Second, if the type size and font styles make the copy hard to see, users will move on rather than torture themselves by squinting at the screen. The solution? Ask a practiced copy editor to review your content, and select color schemes and font styles that are pleasing to the eye. We suggest visiting websites of prominent online retailers for color scheme examples, and a simple sans serif typeset for easy web readability.
Poor Website Navigation: Few things will turn visitors away more quickly than confusing navigation. Your visitors have to find their way to your landing pages and product detail descriptions easily and with minimal effort. We recommend using plenty of logical hyperlinks to your site pages that stand out from the rest of the copy (underlined and in bold blue type, for example). Also, be sure that the page and menu structure is consistent throughout your website.
Incoherent Web Interface: Speaking of consistency, it’s important to avoid the common mistake of interjecting too much “creativity” in your web design. The real beauty in web design and user interfaces can be found in simplicity. The best way to achieve that simplicity is to ensure that the interface is consistent throughout, with the same template for each page and visible links to other pages within the site.
Bad Screen Resolution: Many users of small business web clients make the mistake of forgetting that not every computer screen is set to the same resolution. Just because your site looks good at the resolution your screen is set to doesn’t mean it will look good to every single one of your visitors. In fact, if you’re not careful, some users may be forced to scroll horizontally. Designers should target 1024 X 768 pixels, which will cover the widest possible cross section of users.
