Is Your Website in Need of a Redesign?

website redesign companyIs your company website in need of a quick fix or a complete overhaul? Here are a few ways to know.

We get many clients who come to our web design company looking for advice on how to improve the way they do business online. As we evaluate their current online presence, we often find that the best solution is a total redesign of their current website.

This can be a frightening prospect for many clients and companies initially. Even though their website has failed to meet the business goals, they usually fear that a redesign will confuse their current clients or customers. What they don’t realize is that making smaller adjustments to their existing site is like adding an extension to a house that is falling apart.

A total redesign is more expensive than a quick fix, but the return on investment makes it more than worthwhile if it means you’ll get intuitive navigation, a well-designed user interface, solid architecture and content features designed to create visitor loyalty.

Too many companies make the mistake of waiting too long to do this. Are you?

At Operation Technology, we start with your analytics. Hopefully you have some!! You don’t need a high-priced analytics tool. Google Analytics is free and easy to install on your site. The only way to really understand how your website is performing is to monitor your metrics carefully and consistently. Look to see if your site visitors are doing what you want them to do:

  • Are your bounce rates high (visitors who come to your home page and then leave without visiting any other page or taking any other action)?
  • Are your visitors frustrated by your checkout or registration process? If they abandon forms before completion chances are the frustration level is high.
  • Are they coming back to your site after the first visit?
  • Have your visitors complained about your website? Worst of all, are they leaving your site and going directly to your competition?

Our team also looks to see if your business needs and requirements have changed. Have you jumped into social media marketing? Maybe integrating a Twitter feed to keep your followers up-to-date on company events or happenings will bring more interaction with past and potential clients. Will you be utilizing pay per click advertising to promote new and or existing products but need to spruce up your product web pages?

By keeping on top of these issues, you can see if your website needs a full redesign or a less drastic fix for isolated issues. A website redesign project that improves the user interface, makes navigation more intuitive, and delivers your core message more clearly can only help you. The last thing you want to do is infuriate your target audience. So make sure you put the task of redesigning your site in the hands of a team that understands both design and architecture.

SEO tips for growing your online business.

Keep your website updated with new content related to your business. The search engines rank sites higher that are actively updated. If your site stays stagnant without having content updates for long periods of time, they tend to drop off the rankings. Make sure you add significant content on a regular basis. Additionally, new content that is well written with SEO in mind will be a magnet for the search engine bots.

You must remember to acquire high quality links back to your site. A few high PR (page rank) links will far outweigh a number of low quality backlinks so make sure you’re linking to sites that are worth it and relevant to your site content. You can also ask those sites if they are willing to link back to you in return in order to raise the number of backlinks you to your website. You need to treat the link building as an ongoing process so spend a few minutes each day on your backlink campaign.

Usage of high quality keywords to improve your website hits is also very important for SEO. Putting keywords in places like the title tag and header tags, especially H1 tag, allows your website to show up on more searches. Your title tag is the number one piece of content for ranking well in the search engine results pages. Keep your title about 70 characters long and do not start off with your company name. Never use the same title for two web pages as each title should be unique as to not confuse the web spiders that crawl your site.

Make sure you add captions for any images placed on your website. The captions should be keyword rich so that the web crawlers will be able to spot them when they are searching your site. The keywords can be used within phrases or by themselves.

Do not create a site with search engine optimization as your primary goal. Build your site with your targeted visitor in mind.

Each page on your site offers an opportunity for a customer or a search engine bot to find your website and scan your web pages. Adding a company blog to your website opens up a ton of new opportunities for your site to be found. Your blog can discuss very small aspects of your business that will appeal to your target audience.

Do not be too general with your keywords. These are what will bring readers to your site, so you want to be specific. If you are talking about backpacking through Tahiti, you do not want your keyword to be “travel.” There are thousands of travel sites, and yours will definitely not get the attention it deserves.

A good search engine optimization tool to use is Google’s keyword tool. The Google keyword tool will show you how many people search globally or locally for the keywords you are targeting. It also lets you check the popularity of keywords searches on the internet. Having popular keywords is important to optimizing your search engine results. Don’t forget to target “long tail keywords” (ex: “Chicago website design company” rather than “web design”) as trying to rank for short keywords that are popular will lead to frustration.

Common Website Design Mistakes And How to Avoid Them

When you build a website from scratch, it’s easy to make a few common mistakes that can compromise the effectiveness of a start-up website.

Here are five of the more frequent website design mistakes we’ve encountered at our Chicago website design company, Operation Technology, while working with web design clients, along with a tip or two about avoiding them:

Lack of Website Content Organization: The way your site is structured plays a key role in attracting and retaining visitors. Your pages must be constructed in a way that encourages readers to stick around long enough to get the message you’re trying to convey. Beginners often make the mistake of blasting away with page after page of copy, hoping that something will resonate with their visitors. Avoid falling into that trap by breaking up written content logically, condensing information, using bullet points, paragraph headings, charts and photos.

Lack of Readability: Even if your site’s design takes good organization into account, you can still miss the boat by making written content unreadable. This happens in two ways; first, if the copy is poorly written from a grammatical standpoint, visitors will see your company as less than credible. Second, if the type size and font styles make the copy hard to see, users will move on rather than torture themselves by squinting at the screen. The solution? Ask a practiced copy editor to review your content, and select color schemes and font styles that are pleasing to the eye. We suggest visiting websites of prominent online retailers for color scheme examples, and a simple sans serif typeset for easy web readability.

Poor Website Navigation: Few things will turn visitors away more quickly than confusing navigation. Your visitors have to find their way to your landing pages and product detail descriptions easily and with minimal effort. We recommend using plenty of logical hyperlinks to your site pages that stand out from the rest of the copy (underlined and in bold blue type, for example). Also, be sure that the page and menu structure is consistent throughout your website.

Incoherent Web Interface: Speaking of consistency, it’s important to avoid the common mistake of interjecting too much “creativity” in your web design. The real beauty in web design and user interfaces can be found in simplicity. The best way to achieve that simplicity is to ensure that the interface is consistent throughout, with the same template for each page and visible links to other pages within the site.

Bad Screen Resolution: Many users of small business web clients make the mistake of forgetting that not every computer screen is set to the same resolution. Just because your site looks good at the resolution your screen is set to doesn’t mean it will look good to every single one of your visitors. In fact, if you’re not careful, some users may be forced to scroll horizontally. Designers should target 1024 X 768 pixels, which will cover the widest possible cross section of users.

It’s easy to make mistakes when it comes to web design, but we think it’s just as easy to avoid them. Need help with your website? Use Social Media and Facebook Fan Pages to Grow Your Clientele

Setting up a Facebook Fan Page for your business can help you to connect with the ever-increasing number of people who are joining Facebook worldwide. For an example of a custom Facebook Fan Page you can view our Operation Technology social media fan page.

Facebook allows you to post your business information and send updates to your friends (referred to as “fans” in Facebook Business page jargon) who have opted to see your updates.

You can also post videos and send “notes” which can contain larger amounts of text than the usual Facebook “wall” posts.

Yes, there are limitations, but setting up a custom Business Facebook Page can be an effective way to reach out to your potential customers who use Facebook on a regular basis to connect with friends and family.

For instructions on how to create a Facebook Fan Page, you can view our short instructions here

Create & Customize A Facebook Fan Page For Your Business

So you have a Facebook account for your company and you have friends on there, what next? Facebook allows you to create a fan page where you can dedicate this page to anything from a specific product to the entire brand and within this page you can create a custom looking Facebook page which can have a lot of functionality from your company’s website including links to products and sales pages. Once you have the page created you can collect fans which does not require that you know the people like it does when you add friends. This expands the potential customer base significantly, so I recommend that every business has a fan page setup.

In this article, our Chicago social media consultants at Operation Technology will walk through creating this Facebook Fan page, step by step. I have to note though that as Facebook updates their site and applications, the information in this article may become outdated but the main idea and basic setup should still apply and I am sure you will be able to find the current information simply by searching Google.

Operation Technology Facebook Fan Page

Ok, let’s begin.

First thing you need to do is log into your Facebook account and click on the “Ads and Pages” button in the left sidebar. Then click “Pages”:

Instruction Operation Technology Facebook Fan Page

On the next page you will see a page setup form. It’s pretty simple so just fill out the appropriate fields. You can check the check box at the bottom to hide the page from public viewing until you are done setting it all up. See image below:

Facebook Fan Page Instructions

At this point the page is setup. Now we need to configure all the options and customize the page. First we’ll upload a logo or an avatar for this page. Hover your mouse over the “question mark” image at the top left of the page, and click on “Change Image”, then click “Upload a Picture”. Browse your computer and upload your picture. See image below.

Operation Technology Logo

Next, click on the “Info” tab and then click “Edit Information” on the top right. Fill in the basic information and then the detailed information. Once that’s done, click “Done Editing”. Now click inside the box in the left sidebar that says “Write something about …” and write something about your company, keep it short, no more than two sentences but I’d stick to one.

At this point you can start uploading photos and start writing content in the “Notes” section. Click the “Apps” icon on the left side within the “Edit Page” section and select “Notes” and then click “Write A Note” button. You can keep adding new notes there as many as you want. Also explore the other applications that are available in the “Apps” section.

To take this a step further in customizing your page you can create a custom tab (page). This page will accept HTML / CSS so you can pretty much design the look of it to be whatever you want it to be. You can also add images by uploading them to your own host or an image hosting service somewhere else (Flickr) and then pull them from there.

Here is what we did for our Chicago social media Operation Technology Facebook business page

In the search box at the top of the Facebook page type in “FBML” (without the quotes) and hit “Enter” key. You will see a search result of “Static FBML” Click the link that says “Add to my Page”.

Operation Technology Facebook Fan Page Instructions

The next window will display a list of the pages that you have created and will let you install this application to any of them, so here click the “Add to Page” button next to the page that you want to install this application to and click “Close”.

After you add the FBML Application to your page you will need to navigate back to your page, click the Facebook logo to go back to your Facebook home page, then click “Ads and Pages” in the left sidebar, and then click “Pages” in the left sidebar. Click on the page that you want to configure and you will be back to the page setup page.

Now if you click on the “Apps” icon next to the tabs row you should see the “Services – FBML” available in the menu, click on it to add it to your row of tabs (Wall, Info, Photos, Videos, etc). Now all that’s left is to add the HTML to that page.

To add your HTML code, click on the “Wall” tab, then click the “Edit Page” link under the main page Picture in the left sidebar. Then click “Apps” on left navigation pane. Scroll down to the “Services – FBML” section and click “Go to App”.

This is the page where you will name your tab (ex: “Services”) and also add the HTML for your custom “Tab”/”Page”.

You can use my code as a guide on how to structure your page but you are completely free to design it however you want. Above is the screen shot of what our Facebook business page looks like. You can also see it live by clicking over to our Facebook business fan page.

As you may have noticed you can also send traffic directly to these pages instead of your “Wall” page. This is done in the “Manage Permission” link within the “Edit Page” section. You would go to the section called “Default Landing Tab” and enable the tab of your choosing in the drop down menu. Ours defaults to “Services”.

Simple Ways You Can Improve Your Website PageRank

Google has always been a main source of traffic for many website/blog owners. Page Rank is one among the main factors which influence your position on Google search. Google Page Rank is expected to be updated in next few weeks. As such, here is a list of 10 ways to improve Page Rank which could result in a lot of organic traffic as told by a Chicago SEO company, Operation Technology.

1. Large number of quality backlinks: A large number of backlinks directing towards your website will help you improve Page Rank. Backlinks from highly ranked websites/blogs are usually considered more powerful as they ensure your influence on the web. This is considered to be the most important factor which Googlebot takes into account when calculating Page Rank.

2. Meta Tags: Meta tags help Google in understanding the niche of your website or blog. There are different kinds of meta tags such as meta description, meta keywords etc. which help in bringing targeted audience to your website/blog. This may provide a better idea on Meta tags and its usage.

3. Usage of H1 & H2 tags: H tags should be used only for headings and should not be used for making a letter bold or big. Wrapping your keywords on the H1 tags is of great benefit to get visits for your targeted keywords. So always make sure to have your Keywords on the heading.

4. Organized Linking of Web Pages: Linking the web pages of your website/blog in an organized way will help Google crawl your site easily. Wrong linking may lose your desired position on search.

Page1 -> Page 2
Page2 -> Page 3

Most of the search engines fail to understand that the links which are referred in the above example are been produced through iteration. So it is better to avoid these kind of linking.

5. Avoid misspelling: Most people won’t give much importance to this, but misspellings will have an influence on the Page Rank. There are chances where Google understands these misspelling wrong and apparently end-up with a negative effect and become an hurdle to improve Page Rank.

6. RSS feed: RSS feed for your website/blog not only helps you with better SEO but also for many other purposes. Creating an RSS feed and submitting it to various RSS directories will help improve Page Rank. So, as you update your blog, the directories also get updated and result you with more backlinks and traffic.

7. Use Social Media: Getting articles submitted from your website/blog in popular social media websites like Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc. not only help drive traffic to your site but also helps with backlinks. It’s worth working on social media websites as reaching their featured column will give you a boost in search engine positions and enable you to garner excellent traffic.

8. Submit your website/blog to directories: Find directories with high PR and submit your website/blog. This is one among the most influential and traditional ways to improve Page Rank. Try submitting your websites to as many directories as possible!

9. Update You Website/Blog Regularly: All the above mentioned ways are useless if you can’t update your website/blog frequently. Make a habit of introducing updated and reliable content so that the users will have a necessity to visit your website/blog often. This will also make the search engines realize that you are active.

Hope the above methods help you improve Page Rank! If your business needs assistance, be sure to contact our Chicago SEO consultants for assistance.

With Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process, and not a one-time deal (that is, if you want lasting results). Like The Little Engine That Could (I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!), a small website that regularly posts new (and valuable) updates will outlast the fly-by-night websites built by start-up companies that assemble a site, launch it, and never touch it again. Warning: If you are in the if-I-build-it-they-will-come mindset — think again.

Search engines give preference to web sites that are regularly add new content containing valuable information. The biggest mistake some people make in marketing their web site is to fail to make regular updates. Imagine yourself in Google’s place: you’d give preference to web sites that are ALIVE AND CHANGING rather than web sites that have been launched and then never amended.

It’s a common misconception to think that one can launch a web site, and then the visitors will come. Unless you are a celebrity (or suddenly infamous), simply launching a web site will not bring in clients. Sure, your rankings may jump temporarily after you have launched the site (because the search engines know that you are new), but what’s new quickly (very quickly) becomes old on the worldwide web.

If you are unable to update your web site yourself, consider starting a blog (one that resides on your server, along with your web site files) as a way to continuously provide new and valuable information that will attract the search engines, and new clients as well.

What’s the Most Common Web Design Mistake?

The most common web design mistake (and the easiest one to avoid) is the FAILURE TO FIND THAT ONE QUALITY IMAGE for the main page of your web site — the image that will represent you to the first-time viewer and make them remember you.

This will likely mean spending a good deal of time looking for that image on the web (if you are looking to purchase royalty-free images from a service like photodisk.com, istock.com or jupiterimages.com). If you are unable to find what you want after searching the web, consider hiring a professional photographer. See how go get the most out of your professional photo session for more information on how a professional photo shoot works.

It’s also a mistake to put this decision off until late in the design process: you may find the perfect image — but if you have already designed the rest of your site, you might find yourself having to rethink the entire design (colors, layout, etc.) in order to fit that image. Better to delay the design process until you have found that perfect image, and then tailor the design to match the colors and feel of that image. First things first!

The first page of your web site is your calling card, your first impression; and it’s very important that you put your best foot forward right from the start. Delaying this decision (a decision that can be difficult, if not agonizing) can cost you time and money!

Google’s SEO Starter Guide

SEO by Operation Technology

I got a call from a client the other day who I had just put up a website for. After ranking quickly in a few keywords, he wondered why all his keywords were not ranked in the first page of Google’s results….after 2 weeks! Then came “What are some simple ways that I can improve my website’s performance in Google?” There are lots of possible answers to this question, and a wealth of search engine optimization information on the web, so much that it can be intimidating for newer clients to understand.

Google’s Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide covers around some common areas that we might consider optimizing. Google’s SEO guide goes into improving title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation, anchor text, etc. The guide also goes into some of the pitfalls to avoid, and links to other resources that help expand our explanation of the topics.

So, the next time you get a question, “I have a new site, how can I improve my SERP’s?”, you can direct them to the list of best practices that Google has posted on its “Webmaster Central Blog
